The Middom Project Folio 1647 Book PDF Summary

The Middom Project is an exploratory futuristic dystopian novel based on a modern materialistic authoritarian state with an aging population, a massive over-supply of housing and where censorship, deceit and a lack of care for others is normalised. The novel is written as a biography for the fictional Middom Project, whose aim is to record the history of Middom by secretly recruiting people who have lived extraordinary lives. The protagonist is born in 2010 and endures a torturous schooling environment only to be filtered out at the end of middle school leaving him facing a bleak future without prospects and he accepts a job carrying tiles, becoming an ‘untouchable’, working long hours for slave wages in order to support his family. Eventually, a boast leads to the protagonist working for himself, and his lot in life improves as a dearth of tilers, gives him leverage over desperate customers as the working age population collapses and the elderly need care. The protagonist’s life improves further after he gradually realises that rejecting conventional wisdom creates opportunities for those willing to break with society’s rigid expectations. He recognises that the pursuit of money leads only to oppressive working hours and enormous taxes and avoid both by purchasing an older inexpensive top floor apartment in a derelict district and building a private oasis away from society’s oppressive expectations. As society becomes unstable, the protagonist opens his home to a group of untouchables after his savings are diminished when he helps pay the bribe that spares his mother after she is admitted to hospital and targeted as part of a program to eliminate retirees as part of a program to reduce pension and health costs. For the first time the protagonist begins to attract women who had for years scorned him for his status, and he remains cynical, until N, a mysterious woman, manipulates him into training her cousin in the art of seduction so that she can snare a wealthy husband, and then seeks to become his partner through her wit and tolerance. An inheritance from his sole downstairs neighbour then leaves the protagonist a legacy of illicit foreign videos that enrichen his understanding of the outside world, and he tracks down their source. The seventy-year lease on the protagonists home also runs out; however, he retains the property through clever manipulation that ultimately leads him to being arrested in revenge for his subterfuge. In custody, he experiences physical and psychological torture, but refuses to confess and is eventually released after proving his innocence, and then hears of brutal revenge taken upon his tormentor. The protagonist’s extraordinary rags to riches tale and ability to overcome challenges provided by a dysfunctional society lead to acceptance into the Middom Project, where he discovers he is not alone and is expected to write a biography, and is rewarded by being able to meet other members of the project, who he forms rewarding relationships with.
