Th r se Raquin Book PDF Summary

Zola?s Th?r?se Raquin begins after Th?r?se?s parents have died, and she is sent to live with Madame Raquin and her son, Camille. Th?r?se and Camille grow up together, and when they are old enough, Madame Raquin arranges their marriage. The trio soon moves to Paris so that Camille may look for a job. While they are there, Camille?s friend Laurent visits and Laurent and Th?r?se begin an affair. Frustrated with having to hide her love, Th?r?se devises a plan to kill Camille. She and Laurent?decide to throw Camille out of a boat and drown him. Th?r?se feigns sadness, and Madame Raquin decides that the only way for her to find happiness again is to marry Laurent. Despite the accomplishment of their plan, the marriage between Th?r?se and Laurent is not a good one, as they are frequently?haunted by thoughts of Camille. Madame Raquin suffers a stroke and can no longer speak. Before long, Madame Raquin finds out through the embittered arguments of Th?r?se and Laurent that the duo murdered Camille. She is furious, but because of her poor state, can do nothing. The relationship between Th?r?se and Laurent further declines, and each plots to kill the other. Eventually, though, they make a suicide pact and die together as Madame Raquin watches in satisfaction.
