Petra A literary companion Book PDF Summary

Archibald Forder’s Petra He published the book about Petra in the end of his life (he died in 1934). But his deep knowledge of Petra dates at least of 1895. George Livingston Robinson writes repeatedly about Forder in his book The Sarcophagus of an Ancient Civilization. He writes: «Since Burckhardt’s discovery of this wild desert metropolis in 1812, only occasional explorers and a comparatively small number of tourists have ventured to run the risk of visiting its ruins. Among those whose visits have been recorded […] Archibald Forder in 1895, and after, whose frequent visits have furnished him the opportunity of securing many very exceptionally fine views.» «This large sanctuary [he’s speaking about The triple high place] was first discovered by Forder in May, 1904. It is conspicuously situated high above the so-called Corinthian Tomb on the eastern mountain wall of the city; its altitude above sea level being approximately thirty-six hundred feet.» Finally, in the Appendix to the same book: «It has been the author's high privilege to visit Petra five different times, spending in all 90 days on the journey, of which approximately 28 days were occupied examining the ruins of Petra, alone. The first trip was made April 24 to May 12, 1900, in company with an Englishman named Archibald Forder. We went on horseback from Jerusalem via Jericho, Madaba, Mashutta, Wadi Mojib (the Arnon), Wadi Wali, Di-ban, Kerak, Tafila, and Shaubak to Petra, arriving on May 2, and compelled to leave on May 4. It was on this trip that we discovered the Great High Place, described elsewhere in this volume. Returning, we followed the same route as far back as Tafila, at which point, we struck down over an almost impossible road into the Ghor as-Safieh, at the south end of the Dead Sea.» Enough to say that the pages of Archibald Forder about Petra are undoubtedly a primary source to archaeological knowledge of this place.
